Fascinating

Like many people my age I regard myself as reasonably familiar with the causes and courses of WWII。 The aftermath, not so much。 That is what makes this book such an eye-opener。 It is the story of how Germany moved from broken rubble to a democracy over the course of 10 years。 A truly remarkable book — a gripping read。

In this recently translated book Jahner looks at the 10 years in Germany following the end of the Second World War。 This is a very comprehensive look at what actually happens at the moment peace is decided。 As he points out in his introduction, most common knowledge goes -> end of WW2 -> Marshall plan -> east / west Germany -> fall of the Berlin Wall。 What Jahner sets out in this book is what the days, months and years looked like for people in Germany in the aftermath of either the British, Ame In this recently translated book Jahner looks at the 10 years in Germany following the end of the Second World War。 This is a very comprehensive look at what actually happens at the moment peace is decided。 As he points out in his introduction, most common knowledge goes -> end of WW2 -> Marshall plan -> east / west Germany -> fall of the Berlin Wall。 What Jahner sets out in this book is what the days, months and years looked like for people in Germany in the aftermath of either the British, American or Russians arriving。 How to feed everyone with no crops and no supply lines, how to cope with the returning soldiers。 How to get the economy going and how does a nation cope with enormity both of what happened to them but also what they did。 What is it like to lose a war and rebuild。Jahner does not shy away from some of the darkest aspects of those times。 The general refusal of a people to acknowledge the Holocaust, the xenophobic attitudes towards those who having survived the camps found they were still not wanted at home and the women who had been fundamentally changed by the war coping with returning husbands, who themselves, were no longer the same。 Jahner also looks at issues with the victors。 The British and their initial refusal to allow any more Jewish people into Palestine fearing they would outnumber the Arab population and the political issues this caused with America。 The Americans and the way they reinstated Nazi officers into government roles and in one of the more challenging passages, the sheer wave of sexual violence conducted by the Red Army in the days following the liberation。 This is a fascinating and necessary look at an often unreported aspect of the impact of WW2。 。。。more

Aftermath is a fascinating historical account of post-war Germany; told through politics, art, journalism, sociology, and from eye-witness accounts of how nazification continued to trouble Germany for many years following the war。 It's a torrid and at times graphic account, lengthy, of Germany's fraught political history, and one we quite enjoyed。 Featuring stunning black and white photographs and posters from post-war Germany - some beautiful, some revelatory, some shocking - Aftermath evokes a Aftermath is a fascinating historical account of post-war Germany; told through politics, art, journalism, sociology, and from eye-witness accounts of how nazification continued to trouble Germany for many years following the war。 It's a torrid and at times graphic account, lengthy, of Germany's fraught political history, and one we quite enjoyed。 Featuring stunning black and white photographs and posters from post-war Germany - some beautiful, some revelatory, some shocking - Aftermath evokes an immersive portrait of a society corrupted, demoralised and freed - all at the same time。 If you don't like history, I would avoid it, as it's not a true crime book。 。。。more
